Five candidates are competing to lead the Ontario Liberal Party in a leadership contest scheduled for November 21. The race utilizes ranked ballots cast online across 124 ridings, with a September 7 deadline for new members to join the party to be eligible to vote.
Navdeep Bains, the current fundraising leader, has secured support from several members of parliament and provincial parliament. Sitting MPPs Lee Fairclough and Stephanie Bowman are leveraging caucus support to argue that the party requires a leader who holds a seat in the legislature. Dylan Marando is also campaigning with a team composed of former ministers and advisers.
In contrast, candidate Eric Lombardi has criticized the focus on endorsements. He argues that collecting names for headlines does not address systemic issues like the price of groceries or the healthcare system, stating he prefers to earn votes through a policy plan focused on housing and the economy.
