Alphabet Raises A$5.5 Billion in Record Australian Bond Sale

Alphabet Inc. issued A$5.5 billion in Kangaroo bonds to fund artificial intelligence infrastructure, marking the largest corporate bond sale in Australian history.

Alphabet Inc. raised A$5.5 billion ($3.9 billion) through its inaugural Australian dollar bond issuance, known as Kangaroo bonds, in August 2026. The offering represents the largest corporate bond sale in Australian history and the first time an AI hyperscaler has entered the Australian debt market. The issuance consisted of four tranches with tenors of 3, 5, 10, and 20 years, with the longest tranche carrying a 6.9% coupon.

Investor demand was strong, with bids exceeding A$18 billion. QIC Ltd., an Australian state-owned investment manager, purchased approximately A$170 million of the debt, characterizing the move as a relative value play due to higher yields compared to domestic Australian banks.

Alphabet is using the funds to finance massive artificial intelligence infrastructure and data center spending. The company recently increased its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to between $195 billion and $205 billion, a level of spending that led to its first-ever negative free cash flow in the second quarter of 2026. This transaction is part of a global diversification strategy, following debt issuances in yen, sterling, euros, Swiss francs, and Canadian dollars this year.

While analysts suggest Alphabet's entry could trigger similar moves from other cloud computing operators, Marayka Ward of QIC Ltd. cautioned that the Australian market likely only has the capacity for a few such mega deals annually.
