Barack Obama Criticizes Israel's Founding and Gaza Strategy

Barack Obama sparked backlash after stating that Jews seeking refuge from persecution took land from Palestinians and criticized Israel's reliance on military superiority.

Former U.S. President Barack Obama faced criticism from conservative and pro-Israel commentators after remarks made during a speaking tour event at Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland. During a conversation with journalist Susan McKay, Obama acknowledged the millennia of persecution that drove Jewish people to seek refuge but stated it is "undeniable" that they "took land off people and they were excessive."

Obama argued that the current Israeli government has "ceded moral ground" by relying on military and technological superiority rather than making concessions to Palestinians. He asserted that it is not sustainable to impose conditions on seven million Palestinians that no one would accept for themselves, noting that the stronger party in a conflict bears the responsibility to break the cycle of violence.

Addressing Palestinian leaders, Obama stated they cannot "outkill, outweaponise the Israelis" and must pursue change through nonviolent strategies. He called for a cessation of hostilities, the rebuilding of Gaza, and an end to encroachment into the West Bank, though he noted these goals require a creative American administration.

Critics, including The Daily Wire and HonestReporting, accused Obama of presenting a revisionist history. They argued his comments erase 3,000 years of Jewish ancestral ties to the land and ignore legal land purchases made prior to 1948.
