Ford Announces Fathom Electric Truck With Low-Cost Bidirectional Charging

Ford Motor Company unveiled the Fathom electric pickup, a sub-$30,000 truck featuring integrated bidirectional charging to provide affordable home backup power starting in 2027.

Ford Motor Company announced the Fathom, an electric pickup truck scheduled for production in early 2027 with a starting MSRP of $28,350. The vehicle is built on a new Universal EV Platform designed to compete with low-cost Chinese electric vehicles and will be manufactured at Ford's Louisville plant following a $2 billion retooling.

The Fathom features a built-in bidirectional charging system that can deliver over 10 kW of AC power to a home, serving as a substitute for a small standby generator. By integrating the inverter directly into the vehicle's E-box—a redesign developed with Auto Motive Power, a startup Ford acquired in 2023—the company eliminated the need for expensive wall-mounted inverters. To enable these features, Ford is introducing a Home Power Station for utility management priced at approximately $650 and a Home Backup Panel package for emergency power costing around $2,000 to $2,100.

To manage grid interconnection across the United States and Canada, Ford formed a working group in July with five major utilities, including American Electric Power, BC Hydro, and Consumers Energy. Fathom owners can also participate in virtual power plants to sell electricity back to the grid, with potential annual payouts exceeding $1,000. The truck will utilize the NACS plug type and the SAE J3068 communications technology standard.
