Pakistan Protests US Ambassador's Remarks on Jammu and Kashmir

Pakistan summoned a top US diplomat after Ambassador Sergio Gor described Jammu and Kashmir as an important part of India during a visit to Srinagar.

United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor sparked a diplomatic row after describing Jammu and Kashmir as an important part of India during a visit to Srinagar on August 19, 2026. During meetings with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Gor praised security improvements in the region and indicated that Washington would re-evaluate its Level 4 do not travel advisory, which currently warns citizens against visiting the Union Territory due to terrorism and civil unrest.

In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan summoned US Charge d'Affaires Natalie Baker to Islamabad to lodge a strong demarche. Pakistan rejected Gor's characterization as factually incorrect and irresponsible, asserting that the region is an internationally recognized disputed territory. While protesting the remarks, Pakistan acknowledged President Donald Trump's previous offer to mediate the dispute.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah characterized the resulting tension as a matter between Pakistan and the United States, stating that he could not intervene. Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs of India dismissed Pakistan's frustration and reaffirmed that Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh are integral and indivisible parts of India.

Parallel to the diplomatic dispute, tensions escalated in New Delhi and Islamabad. Indian authorities demolished structures and security barricades outside the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, citing boundary encroachments. This action followed reports that Pakistani authorities had removed similar barricades outside the Indian High Commission in Islamabad earlier in the week.
