Options Traders Price 2026 Midterms as Routine Event

Options traders are pricing the 2026 U.S. midterm elections as a routine event, though analysts warn markets are underestimating the risk of a contested count.

Options traders are treating the 2026 U.S. midterm elections as a routine event, operating on the assumption that a decisive Democratic victory will be known by November 4. Analysis from Man Group indicates that S&P 500 options are pricing volatility at approximately 1.2 times a typical day, a level consistent with previous midterms but significantly lower than those seen during presidential elections.

Market expectations suggest a Democratic sweep would boost healthcare and retail stocks while negatively impacting investment banks, brokers, and the aerospace and defense sectors. However, Man Group warns that the market may be underestimating the risk of a contested count.

Quantitative researcher Adam Keogh noted that control of a chamber can hinge on a few close races that have historically taken weeks to resolve. Given current high government borrowing costs and AI-related market jitters, a delayed result similar to the 2020 or 2022 elections could trigger significant market instability.
