Global Fuel Prices Rise Amid Middle East Tensions

Governments in Pakistan, Vietnam, and Italy report rising fuel costs, while Ireland cancels planned excise duty increases to shield consumers from global market volatility.

Fuel prices rose across multiple continents between August 20 and August 21, 2026, driven by global market pressures and tensions in the Middle East. In Vietnam, the ministries of Industry and Trade and Finance raised retail prices for petrol and diesel, citing stalled oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing peace negotiations between the United States and Iran.

In Pakistan, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority implemented sequential price hikes. Petrol rose to Rs 337.78 per litre and high-speed diesel to Rs 364.70 per litre, with dealer margins further increasing by Rs 1.34 effective August 22. Similarly, Italy saw petrol prices hit a three-year high of €2.005 per litre for self-service on August 21.

Conversely, the Government of Ireland moved to mitigate these costs for its citizens. Following pressure from farmers, hauliers, and the Sinn Féin party, the government announced the cancellation of planned excise duty increases for September and October. Officials stated they would monitor the situation closely and reserve the right to adjust their response as required.
