Governor Tina Kotek Outlines Second-Term Priorities for Oregon
Governor Tina Kotek announced plans to prioritize affordability, universal preschool, and a new Department of Commerce following her reelection.
Governor Tina Kotek announced her legislative and budgetary priorities for a second term during a news conference in Portland on Friday. Kotek stated her primary focus is improving affordability for families and supporting vulnerable populations, specifically targeting universal preschool, affordable housing, healthcare, and childcare.
To address expected federal funding reductions and threats to Medicaid, Kotek is preparing a budget due December 1. Her proposed structural changes to state government include replacing Business Oregon with a new Department of Commerce and establishing the Oregon State Hospital as a standalone agency.
Kotek also detailed plans to implement new early childhood education policies and set energy and water standards for data centers. She criticized large corporations for using artificial intelligence to increase profits at the expense of consumers, while emphasizing her commitment to supporting small businesses and creating new jobs.
