Ofgem Lowers Typical Annual Energy Bill to £1,709

The energy regulator Ofgem revised the calculations for the typical annual household energy bill for October, lowering the headline figure to approximately £1,709 from a projected £1,899. This reduction of roughly £190 does not stem from a decrease in energy prices, but from a downward revision of the assumed volume of gas and electricity consumed by households.

To better reflect current domestic behavior and improved energy efficiency following the energy crisis, the regulator dropped the gas benchmark for medium-use customers from 11,500kWh to 9,500kWh and the electricity benchmark from 2,700kWh to 2,500kWh. Cornwall Insight had previously forecasted the price cap at £1,899.44 based on the older consumption assumptions.

Ofgem acknowledged that this technical change could mislead consumers into believing energy prices are falling. In reality, actual unit rates are expected to increase, with typical direct debit customers seeing additions of approximately 0.19p per kWh for electricity and 0.07p per kWh for gas.
