EU Designates Skouries Mine as Strategic Raw Materials Project
The European Commission designated the Skouries copper-gold mine in Greece as a Strategic Project to strengthen the EU's critical raw materials supply chain.
The European Commission has designated the Skouries copper-gold mine in northern Greece as a Strategic Project under the European Union’s Critical Raw Materials Act. Located in the Halkidiki region, the mine is operated by Eldorado Gold Corporation and is recognized for its potential to reduce the EU's dependence on external sources for critical raw materials.
Copper is identified as a strategic metal essential for renewable energy infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, and the broader energy transition. The Skouries project involves an investment of over US$2 billion and is expected to operate for approximately 20 years, providing hundreds of direct jobs and stimulating regional economic activity.
Christian Milau, President and CEO of Eldorado Gold, stated that the designation highlights the project's strategic significance and its role in strengthening Europe's long-term supply chain resilience. He noted that as one of the largest new copper-gold mines in Europe, the site is positioned to support the responsible supply of materials essential to industrial competitiveness and economic growth.
