India Crosses 300 GW Non-Fossil Fuel Power Capacity

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced at the 7th CII International Energy Conference & Exhibition in New Delhi that India's non-fossil fuel electricity generation capacity has surpassed 300 GW. This milestone positions the country to meet its target of 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030. Between January and June 2026, India added 30.58 GW of capacity, a 25 percent increase over the previous year.

Joshi detailed the expansion of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, noting that the scheme now benefits 50 lakh households and has reached a cumulative rooftop solar capacity of 14 GW. Installations grew from 5,000 per day in October 2025 to over 16,000 per day in July 2026. Approximately 19 lakh households now receive zero electricity bills, while 12 lakh households have earned roughly ₹421 crore by selling surplus power.

Minister of Steel and Heavy Industries H D Kumaraswamy highlighted the ₹18,100 crore Production Linked Incentive scheme for batteries, emphasizing that domestic manufacturing is critical for energy security. Additionally, Bhutan's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Lyonpo Gem Tshering outlined a regional goal to expand Bhutan's power generation to 25 GW by 2040 through 15 GW of hydropower and 5 GW of solar energy.
