Caterpillar Reports Record $20.5 Billion Revenue Amid AI Push

Caterpillar Inc. achieved record quarterly sales of $20.5 billion while expanding AI and autonomous technology from mining into construction and general jobsites.

Caterpillar Inc. reported second-quarter revenue of $20.5 billion, marking the first time the company has exceeded $20 billion in quarterly sales. This 24% year-over-year increase was driven largely by the power and energy division, which generated $8.2 billion in revenue and over $2 billion in operating profit. The surge is attributed to high demand for power-generation equipment for AI data centers, contributing to a $72 billion order backlog.

Parallel to this financial growth, the company is expanding its artificial intelligence and autonomy capabilities. By applying lessons from automated mining, Caterpillar is integrating autonomy into quarries and construction sites. The company introduced the Cat AI Assistant, a voice-command tool for field technicians to troubleshoot repairs using data from 1.6 million connected assets. Additionally, the company is deploying AI agents for software development and utilizing digital twins for manufacturing analysis.

To support these technological shifts, Caterpillar launched the Building the Future Workforce Initiative, a $100 million investment to train 118,000 employees in AI, autonomy, and robotics over five years. This includes a $3 million manufacturing workforce commitment in Arkansas, established on August 17 in partnership with local technical colleges and the chamber of commerce. Despite the growth, the company's stock has risen nearly 90% over the past year, pushing its forward price-to-earnings ratio to 32.05.
