Ford Plans to Sell 100,000 Fathom Electric Pickups

Ford Motor Company plans to sell more than 100,000 units of its new affordable electric pickup truck, the Fathom, during its first year of production. Scheduled to begin next year, the vehicle will start at approximately $30,000 and utilize lithium iron phosphate batteries.

To lower production costs, the company is implementing a novel assembly technique that joins three pre-built vehicle sections and using massive casting machines to reduce the number of individual parts. The Fathom will be produced at the company's assembly plant in Louisville, Kentucky.

While Ford describes the Fathom as a mid-sized truck, observers of prototypes displayed in Las Vegas suggest the vehicle is similar in size to the compact gas-powered Maverick. CEO Jim Farley stated the Fathom would offer more interior space than a Toyota RAV4. The truck will feature native Apple Maps integration and offer both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive options.
