Hermantown City Council Approves Google Data Center Project
The Hermantown City Council unanimously approved permits for a 500-megawatt Google data center after the company withdrew its request for $80 million in tax breaks.
The Hermantown City Council unanimously approved six resolutions and a special-use permit on November 2, 2026, allowing Google to proceed with a proposed 500-megawatt data center. The approval followed hours of public testimony from residents who raised concerns regarding environmental impacts, water usage, noise, and electricity demand.
To secure the approval, Google withdrew its request for up to $80 million in property tax breaks. Despite the council's vote, the project still requires approval from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission for its electric service agreement and must obtain further wetland permits. The development also faces ongoing lawsuits.
Local business and labor leaders strongly supported the decision. Supporters described the investment as a catalyst for regional economic growth and job creation for skilled workers and local businesses. The project is viewed by proponents as a long-term investment that will benefit the community's workforce and schools for generations.
