Margin Debt Surge Triggers Historical Stock Market Warning
Fundstrat Global Advisors warns of a potential stock market decline after margin debt increased 49% over the past year.
Fundstrat Global Advisors identified a historical warning signal for a stock market decline after margin debt increased 49% over the past year. Data from the research firm shows that since 1960, the market has declined 83% of the time following a year-over-year margin debt increase exceeding 45%.
The firm notes that the median performance of the S&P 500 is a 4.2% decline over the subsequent 12 months after a 40% surge in margin debt. This trend occurs because investors are often forced to quickly unwind debt during downturns, which accelerates selling pressure.
Other risk factors contributing to market instability include the CAPE ratio reaching its second-highest reading on record. Additionally, the Federal Reserve System has initiated a rate-hike cycle following a three-year pause in interest rate adjustments.
