Abdul El-Sayed, a former public health official, will join party leaders in Detroit on Friday, August 8, 2026, for a gathering intended to demonstrate Democratic unity. The event follows a contentious U.S. Senate primary in which El-Sayed secured a narrow victory by less than one percentage point over establishment-backed Representative Haley Stevens.
El-Sayed now prepares to face Republican Mike Rogers in the general election for the seat vacated by Senator Gary Peters. To ensure the party closes ranks in the battleground state, Representative Stevens has pledged her support and expressed willingness to campaign for El-Sayed.
The unity event will include other high-profile figures, including gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson, Michigan Democratic Party chair Curtis Hertel, and former transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg.
