African Leaders Demand Permanent UN Security Council Seats

During the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, a coalition of African leaders demanded a fundamental restructuring of the UN Security Council to grant the continent permanent representation. William Ruto, President of Kenya, led the call, arguing that the current veto power held by five nations contradicts the principle of sovereign equality and reflects colonial-era realities rather than 21st-century geopolitics. Other leaders, including Joseph Nyuma Boakai of Liberia and Taye Atske Selassie of Ethiopia, characterized the exclusion of Africa's 54 member states as a historical injustice that undermines the organization's legitimacy.

Most leaders aligned with the African Union's 2005 position, requesting at least two permanent seats with veto rights. Beyond security governance, the leaders pressed for a meaningful voice in the regulation of artificial intelligence and the management of critical minerals. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai specifically called for binding ethical standards for AI to prevent developing nations from becoming mere consumers of foreign algorithms.

Parallel to political demands, the leaders urged a reform of the international financial architecture. President Ruto highlighted that 46 developing countries spend more on debt interest than on health or education, while President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda advocated for an inclusive international tax system to curb illicit financial flows. Ruto emphasized that while global reform is necessary, it must be matched by domestic accountability and anti-corruption efforts within African nations.
