Google Bypasses Power Grid Delays With Data Center Colocation
Google is placing data centers directly next to power plants to avoid electrical transmission wait times that can exceed 12 years.
Google identifies the United States electrical transmission system as the primary obstacle to powering its data centers for artificial intelligence. During an American Enterprise Institute event, Marsden Hanna, Google's Global Head of Sustainability and Climate Policy, stated that transmission barriers are the leading challenge facing the grid. He noted that interconnection wait times have increased significantly, citing one utility that quoted a 12-year timeline just to complete a mandatory interconnection study.
To mitigate these delays caused by slow grid expansion and permitting, Google is employing a co-location strategy. This approach involves building data centers directly adjacent to power plants to access electricity without relying on the congested transmission system. While Google continues to pursue the eventual integration of these resources into the grid, the current shift toward colocation has prompted federal and regional regulators to evaluate new guidelines for grid reliability and cost allocation.
Hanna urged policymakers to accelerate the approval process for new high-voltage transmission lines to resolve these systemic bottlenecks.
