Lok Sabha Adjourned Twice Amid Opposition Protests Over Police Action

The Lok Sabha faced repeated disruptions during the third week of its Monsoon Session, leading to adjournments on August 3 and 4, 2026. Om Birla, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, first adjourned the House until noon on Monday after Opposition members disrupted Question Hour. Protests centered on issues including examination paper leaks, the Ram Mandir donation theft case, and police actions at Jantar Mantar.

Disruptions continued into Tuesday, forcing another adjournment until 2 p.m. Opposition members shouted slogans demanding that Home Minister Amit Shah address the House regarding police action against student demonstrators during a July 20 march to Parliament. Speaker Birla urged members to cooperate, stating that Parliament is the highest forum of democracy and not a platform for slogan-shouting.

Despite the unrest, the House passed the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026, via voice vote. This legislation increases the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges from 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice, to address case pendency. The government also scheduled the introduction of the Indian Statistical Institute Bill, the Bankers’ Books Evidence Bill, and the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Amendment) Bill.
