US Envoy Andrew Puzder Warns EU Against Hindering AI Firms

Andrew Puzder warned the European Union that hindering foreign tech companies will prevent the bloc from successfully competing in the global artificial intelligence race.

Andrew Puzder, the US envoy to the European Union, stated during remarks on April 9 that the EU cannot successfully compete in the global artificial intelligence race by hindering foreign companies. His warnings come as the EU prepares to unveil measures intended to boost its domestic tech sector and decrease reliance on US cloud, AI, and semiconductor providers.

Puzder criticized the EU's history of imposing billions of euros in fines on US companies for content rule violations and digital competition issues. He argued that the EU must stop punishing companies that provide essential hardware stacks and data centers if it wishes to establish a productive partnership, asserting that Europe cannot pull itself into the AI economy by bringing other players down.

While Puzder expressed a desire for the EU and the United States to collaborate in countering China, he noted that a recently agreed-upon dialogue to resolve digital tensions has not yet begun. He urged both parties to move past their disagreements to avoid strategic stagnation. The envoy questioned whether the EU's current strategy is designed to make Europe more competitive or simply to make other global players less competitive, characterizing the latter as a bad plan.
