Silicon Valley Tech Layoffs Reach 7,295 in Early 2026

Tech companies in Silicon Valley laid off 7,295 employees during the first half of 2026, according to an analysis by Joint Venture Silicon Valley. This figure represents 91% of the total job cuts recorded in 2025 and puts the region on pace for its most severe layoff trend since 2023. Meta Platforms Inc. contributed significantly to the decline, cutting approximately 3,382 positions across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.

Russell Hancock, CEO of Joint Venture, attributes the reductions to post-pandemic recalibrations following previous overhiring and the integration of large language models. He describes the current economic state as a paradox, noting that while layoffs are occurring, the region is not in a recession. Hancock points to the June unemployment rate of 3.9% in Silicon Valley, which remained lower than the national July rate of 4.1%, as evidence that displaced workers are successfully transitioning into startups and healthcare.

Senior researcher Danny Wessler noted that the data, derived from WARN reports, likely represents an undercount. He explained that these reports only cover larger layoffs at larger companies and that some firms find ways to avoid filing requirements, though the data still provides a directional sense of the scale of job losses.
