Aspen Pharmacare Earnings Rise 28% Amid Weight-Loss Expansion

Aspen Pharmacare reported a 28% increase in normalized earnings driven by manufacturing restructuring and a strategic expansion into the global weight-loss medicine market.

Aspen Pharmacare Holdings Ltd. reported a 28% increase in normalized earnings from continuing operations for the fiscal year ending in June. The growth followed manufacturing restructuring and a strategic push into the weight-loss medicine market, specifically targeting the rising demand for GLP-1 gut hormone mimics.

The company plans to roll out its weight-loss portfolio globally in the new financial year. In South Africa, Aspen currently distributes Mounjaro, a drug produced by Eli Lilly & Co. While the company received Canadian regulatory approval in July for a generic injectable semaglutide to treat type 2 diabetes, commercialization is currently delayed. This delay stems from temporary supply constraints of the active pharmaceutical ingredient provided by Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd.

Between May and August, Aspen repurchased 13.3 million shares for approximately 1.98 billion rand, or 123 million dollars.
