Australia Weighs Federal Ban on AI Smart Glasses

The Australian government is evaluating a potential nationwide ban or strict limitations on AI smart glasses within Commonwealth offices, parliamentary facilities, and administrative departments. Public Service Minister Katy Gallagher has commissioned the Australian Public Service Commission to determine if an absolute ban or operational guidelines are necessary to prevent espionage and data leaks, following warnings from defense intelligence officials that wearables can covertly capture classified documents.

This federal movement follows a wave of local restrictions. The Canterbury-Bankstown council in Sydney recently voted to ban the devices at public pools, joining similar efforts by the City of Brisbane, the City of Yarra in Melbourne, and the Randwick council. Local leaders, including Mayor Bilal El-Hayek, cited concerns that predators could use the technology for covert filming in change rooms and pools.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has endorsed the review as part of a broader effort to establish digital safety guardrails and national AI standards by early 2027. While Attorney General Michelle Rowland has requested that the Privacy Commissioner prioritize these concerns, she emphasized the need to balance privacy with accessibility for people with disabilities. Simultaneously, Employment Minister Amanda Rishworth is leading roundtables with major businesses to develop national best-practice guidance for AI in the workplace, while tech firms like OpenAI have urged the government to coordinate internationally to mitigate global security threats.
