Malaysia to Introduce Risk-Based AI Law in 2027

The Government of Malaysia plans to implement its first dedicated artificial intelligence law in early 2027 using a risk-based regulatory approach.

The Government of Malaysia plans to introduce its first dedicated artificial intelligence law in early 2027. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo announced in parliament that the administration is currently drafting an AI Act that utilizes a risk-based approach and is developing specific enforcement mechanisms to govern the technology.

This legislative initiative is part of a broader strategy by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to mitigate risks associated with AI and social media. The move follows global regulatory trends, specifically the European Union's AI Act, as Malaysia seeks to establish a formal legal framework for emerging technologies.

The proposed law builds on recent domestic regulatory actions. In June, the government implemented requirements for social media platforms to verify user ages and prohibit the creation of accounts for children under 16.
