Global Companies Cut Thousands of Jobs to Prioritize AI
Major corporations across technology and finance are implementing massive layoffs to redirect resources toward artificial intelligence and automation.
A broad coalition of global companies across the technology, finance, and consumer sectors has implemented significant workforce reductions since October 2025. These layoffs signal a systemic industrial shift as firms restructure to streamline operations and redirect capital toward artificial intelligence integration and AI-driven workflows.
HSBC Holdings is currently weighing the elimination of 20,000 positions as part of an AI-driven overhaul. In the technology sector, Amazon cut 16,000 corporate jobs in January, while Microsoft reduced its workforce by 4,800 positions, impacting its commercial and Xbox divisions. Meta similarly downsized its Superintelligence Labs as it pivoted from the Metaverse toward AI devices.
Other significant reductions include Standard Chartered, which cut over 7,000 jobs over four years, and British American Tobacco, which plans to eliminate 5,500 roles to shift toward AI-centric positions. The trend extends to diverse firms such as HP Inc., FICO, and Allianz, reflecting a wider corporate strategy to replace manual work with automation to reduce costs.
