China to Host 33rd APEC Leaders Meeting in Shenzhen

The Government of China will host the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Shenzhen this November, highlighting the city's role as a global technology hub.

The Government of China will host the 33rd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Shenzhen this November. This marks the third time China has hosted the event, following previous summits in Shanghai in 2001 and Beijing in 2014.

Shenzhen has emerged as a global center for advanced manufacturing and emerging industries, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence, robotics, and new energy vehicles. The city is home to major technology firms including Huawei, Tencent, and BYD, the latter of which surpassed Tesla in global electric vehicle sales in 2025. Additionally, Shenzhen leads China's low-altitude economy, producing approximately 70 percent of the nation's consumer drones and half of its industrial drones. This sector is supported by companies like DJI and Meituan, which has established drone-delivery routes for over 1,500 merchants.

Economic data from the first half of 2026 shows that Shenzhen's trade with other APEC economies grew by 33 percent to 1.98 trillion yuan. This figure represents 68.8 percent of the city's total foreign trade. The city's industrial growth is further bolstered by a robotics sector that saw humanoid robot production increase by 83.1 percent last year, driven by firms such as UBTECH Robotics.
