Chief Justice Surya Kant Urges Court Intervention for Rights
Chief Justice Surya Kant asserts that constitutional courts must intervene when rights are violated and emphasizes that tap connections do not guarantee water access.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant stated that constitutional courts must intervene when the rights provided under the Constitution of India are violated. Speaking at the 33rd Foundation Day celebrations of the National Human Rights Commission at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi, he emphasized that drinking water must be safe, reliable, and available.
Surya Kant noted that a tap connection alone does not guarantee access to water and argued that the government must maintain the systems that deliver water to the people. He described the roles of the judiciary and human rights commissions as complementary, explaining that while courts exercise writ jurisdictions, commissions provide the fact-finding machinery and credibility needed to address the grievances of marginalized communities.
National Human Rights Commission Chairperson Justice V Ramasubramanian also addressed the event. He characterized the office of the Chief Justice of India as the most powerful, vibrant, and simultaneously vulnerable office in the country.
