Discord Launches Global Age Assurance System Using AI Signals

Starting September 23, 2026, Discord Inc. began rolling out a revised global age assurance system to comply with international child safety laws and regulations in the United States, Brazil, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The system automatically sorts users into Adult, Teen, or Unconfirmed categories by analyzing account signals such as tenure, device information, and activity patterns. Discord estimates that over 90% of users will be correctly categorized without needing manual verification.

Users categorized as teens or unconfirmed face restrictive defaults, including blurred sensitive media and limited access to age-restricted servers. Those who wish to access adult content or were incorrectly labeled can verify their age through several methods, including credit card checks via Stripe, Google Wallet, AgeKey, or data from the Apple and Google Play stores. As a last resort, the platform offers facial scans and government ID scans.

The rollout follows a February 2026 delay caused by user backlash and a October 2025 security breach at a third-party vendor that exposed the identification documents of approximately 70,000 users. In the United Kingdom, Discord will not use the automatic estimation model due to the Online Safety Act, requiring UK users to verify manually to lift safety restrictions. The Electronic Frontier Foundation criticized the policy, warning that age-gating the internet creates dangerous forms of surveillance and censorship.
