China to Supply 1.2 Million Tons of Urea to India

The Government of China is expected to supply at least 1.2 million tons of urea to India, fulfilling at least two-thirds of India's most recent fertilizer tender. All shipments are required to leave loading ports by September 24.

This increase in sales follows a policy shift by Beijing to loosen export controls and raise urea quotas to between 5 and 5.5 million tons. China had previously tightened these controls to protect its own domestic supplies during the war in Iran. The decision aims to stabilize a global market where prices reached a four-year high in April, driven by supply disruptions in the Middle East.

India relies heavily on urea imports, supported by government subsidies, to sustain the production of wheat, sugar, and cotton. As the world's largest rice exporter, the country depends on these shipments to maintain its agricultural output and food security.
