Zeke Cohen Leads Rally Against BGE Rate Hike

Baltimore City Council President Zeke Cohen led a coalition of labor, environmental, and community advocates in a downtown rally on Tuesday to oppose a proposed $156 million rate increase by Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE). The utility company argues the hike is necessary to fund infrastructure investments and reduce power outages, stating it has already deferred certain projects to protect customers.

Cohen challenged the utility's justification, asserting that BGE is prioritizing shareholders over residents. He noted that electric delivery rates nearly doubled between 2010 and 2025 and highlighted that approximately 290,000 customers are currently behind on their bills. The proposed increase would raise monthly electric bills for customers by about $8.

The Maryland Public Service Commission is currently reviewing the request. Following a period of public input, the commission is expected to issue a final order in early 2027.
