Worcestershire County Council Seeks Approval to Raise Taxes Above 5%

Worcestershire County Council plans to raise council tax beyond the 5% limit to address a £43.6 million funding gap driven by social care costs.

Worcestershire County Council is seeking government permission to increase council tax by more than the standard 5% limit to address a £43.6 million funding gap for the upcoming financial year. The authority, led by a Reform UK minority administration, cites intensifying pressures in adults and children's social care as the primary drivers for the hike. Officials stated that maintaining low tax levels is no longer a sustainable policy.

The council faces escalating financial instability, with a projected gap of £73.9 million for 2026-27 and a cumulative deficit of £272.6 million by 2028-29. To balance the 2025-26 budget, the council requires £33.6 million in exceptional financial support from the government and has already depleted £12.6 million from its reserves. A final decision on the tax rate and government support is expected by February 20.

This proposal comes as Reform UK faces scrutiny, as up to eight of the 13 councils run by the party have hinted at tax increases despite campaign promises to reduce taxes and waste. While the council is currently identifying cost-cutting measures, officials warn that further savings would significantly impact staff and residents.
