Nomura Asset Management Acquires Macquarie Units to Expand Globally

Nomura Asset Management is leveraging rising Japanese bond yields and equity interest to expand international operations following its acquisition of Macquarie's U.S. and European businesses.

Nomura Asset Management is expanding its international operations to capitalize on rising bond yields and increased global investor interest in Japanese equities. The firm, Japan's largest investment manager with approximately 128 trillion yen in assets under management, is working to shift global investors from underweight to overweight positions in Japanese stocks after decades of economic deflation.

To accelerate this growth, the company acquired the U.S. and European public asset management businesses of Macquarie Group. This acquisition provides a larger distribution network in Western markets where organic growth is typically more difficult. Chief Executive Shoichi Ohkoshi noted that the move puts the firm in a position to scale up significantly.

Beyond equities, the firm is developing corporate credit products to serve Japanese companies that are shifting away from traditional bank lending. This strategy aligns with a broader effort by Nomura International Holdings to establish the company as a more prominent global financial player.
