Saudi Arabia Launches Media Campaign Against United Arab Emirates

The Government of Saudi Arabia has initiated a state-led media campaign and military interventions against the United Arab Emirates, escalating the most significant diplomatic rift between the two Gulf neighbors in years. The tension centers on Yemen, where the Saudi-led coalition conducted airstrikes against weapons shipments intended for UAE-backed separatists in Mukalla. These actions followed a demand by the Yemeni Presidential Council for the UAE to withdraw its forces within 24 hours.

Saudi state media, specifically Al-Ekhbariya TV, has accused Abu Dhabi of "investing in chaos" and supporting secessionists in Libya, Yemen, and the Horn of Africa. Saudi authorities further criticized the UAE's normalization with Israel, describing its regional activities as an "Israeli project wearing a kandura." The Saudi government also facilitated media access to former Emirati military bases to report on alleged secret prisons, a claim the UAE categorically denied.

This public struggle for regional primacy extends beyond Yemen. Saudi Arabia has excluded the UAE from a new Sudan ceasefire proposal and courted Somalia after the latter cancelled all agreements with Abu Dhabi. In response to the growing friction, the UAE has sought a strategic defense partnership with India, while Saudi Arabia has strengthened ties with Pakistan and Turkey. Although Saudi officials have threatened painful economic measures, analysts suggest a full rupture of diplomatic ties remains unlikely.
