HMRC Urges 12 Million Taxpayers to File Returns Early
HM Revenue and Customs is urging 12 million taxpayers to submit their Self Assessment returns early to avoid the January deadline rush.
The HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is calling on approximately 12 million taxpayers to file their Self Assessment tax returns for the 2025 to 2026 tax year ahead of schedule. The agency aims to reduce the typical January rush, noting that the deadline for online submissions is 31 January 2027, while paper returns are due by 31 October 2026.
Chief Customer Officer Myrtle Lloyd stated that the current window is the ideal time to get ahead and file early. HMRC highlighted that early filing allows taxpayers to determine their liabilities, plan budgets, and receive refunds more quickly while avoiding potential penalties. To assist the process, the agency provides a checker tool, digital assistant, and instructional videos via GOV.UK.
Specific filing requirements for this period include Capital Gains Tax declarations for cryptoasset owners with gains exceeding £3,000 and the repayment of 2025 Winter Fuel Payments for individuals with incomes over £35,000. Additionally, prepopulated details will be provided for roughly 300,000 customers paying the High Income Child Benefit Charge. HMRC also warned taxpayers to remain vigilant against phishing scams and avoid sharing sign-in credentials or clicking unexpected links.
