South Norfolk Council Approves 92-Home Hethersett Development

South Norfolk Council approved a Persimmon Homes proposal for 92 dwellings in Hethersett as Hertsmere Borough Council prepares to vote on a larger Local Plan.

The South Norfolk Council approved a proposal by Persimmon Homes to construct 92 dwellings in Hethersett, located north of the village centre off Little Melton Road. The development includes 60 market homes, 32 affordable homes, and five self-build plots. Council planners stated the scheme integrates biodiversity measures and will not harm the character of the area, though local residents raised concerns about the capacity of existing schools and doctor's surgeries.

This project is part of a long-term strategy that could result in up to 1,375 homes being built in Hethersett by 2038. The council noted that the amended scheme provides the agreed affordable housing package alongside the self-build plots.

In a separate planning matter, Hertsmere Borough Council is preparing for an October 7 vote on a Local Plan to meet a government target of 16,575 new homes. Council Leader Jeremy Newmark argued that adopting the plan is necessary to maintain local control over development and prevent speculative projects. Following a consultation with 6,000 respondents, the council removed several major urban extensions from the plan, including sites in Borehamwood, Potters Bar, Bushey, and Radlett.
