Royal Navy Tracks Russian Warships and Intelligence Vessels
The Royal Navy deployed warships and helicopters to monitor Russian intelligence vessels and intercept ships escorting sanctioned cargo in British waters.
The Royal Navy conducted three focused operations between September 29 and October 14 to monitor Russian military and intelligence activity in United Kingdom waters. These missions included the tracking of the Russian intelligence ship Viktor Leonov off the coast of Scotland, where the vessel was shadowing Exercise Strike Warrior, a NATO-led multinational training exercise involving over 2,000 personnel from six nations.
As part of Operation Iceblast, Merlin helicopters deployed from Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose to Glasgow Prestwick Airport to maintain surveillance of the Viktor Leonov near the Outer Hebrides. Simultaneously, the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dauntless and the patrol ship HMS Tyne operated in the English Channel to monitor the Russian frigate RFN Neustrashimy and the landing ship RFN Aleksandr Shabalin. These Russian warships were escorting sanctioned cargo ships, such as the MV Energy-2, to help Moscow circumvent Western sanctions.
The operations coincided with the UK Foreign Office designating Russian oil companies and shadow fleet tankers to restrict funding for Russia's war in Ukraine. Navy officials stated the missions were designed to test the rapid deployment capabilities of the Merlin Helicopter Force and disrupt the use of shadow fleets. This activity occurs amid broader security concerns, including reported increases in drone-related incidents near UK Ministry of Defence sites.
