OpenAI CFO Says AI Reduces Need for Mundane Workers

Sarah Friar, the Chief Financial Officer of OpenAI, stated that artificial intelligence is reducing the need for workers who perform repetitive and mundane tasks. In an interview with CNBC, Friar explained that OpenAI implemented its own AI products within its finance department to automate credit checks. This shift reduced the cost per check from $200 to approximately 17 cents and decreased the number of personnel required for the process.

Friar argued that automating rote work allows employees to focus on higher-intelligence tasks at the edge. She characterized the work being replaced as jobs she does not consider great, suggesting that intelligent models are better suited for mundane tasks than junior analysts.

This perspective contrasts with more severe warnings from other industry figures. Computer scientist Geoffrey Hinton and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei have suggested that the rapid improvement of AI technology could eliminate up to half of entry-level white-collar positions.
