UNICEF Demands Protection for Children Amid Rising War Casualties
UNICEF called for an end to attacks on children after reporting multiple child deaths in Russia and Ukraine and the destruction of a major aid warehouse.
The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) appealed for the protection of children and civilian infrastructure following a surge in airstrikes and drone attacks by both Russian and Ukrainian forces. The agency reported that at least six children died in Ukraine over a seven-day period, with fatalities in the Dnipropetrovsk and Sumy regions. In the Russian Federation, attacks in the Krasnodar and Belgorod regions killed four children, including a 13-year-old girl struck near a playground.
Casualties have intensified, with June 2026 recording the highest monthly child death toll since 2022, leaving seven children dead and 116 injured. The conflict has also targeted humanitarian logistics; a wave of bombardment on July 19 destroyed a UNICEF-contracted warehouse in Bilohorodka, resulting in the loss of 106,000 items valued at $3.9 million.
To mitigate these shocks, UNICEF is implementing a $160.5 million response plan for the 2026-2027 winter. This initiative focuses on cash assistance, repairing district heating systems, and ensuring energy resilience for schools and health facilities. Additionally, the organization established a recovery center at the Zaporizhzhia Regional Children's Hospital to provide psychological support and protection services for affected minors.
