Piyush Goyal Warns EU Carbon Taxes Invite Economic Disaster

Indian Minister Piyush Goyal criticized the European Union's carbon border taxes, warning they will fuel inflation and undermine European industrial competitiveness.

Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal criticized the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and anti-deforestation regulations during the Berlin Global Dialogue on October 22-23, 2026. Goyal warned that the EU is "inviting disaster" by imposing carbon taxes and import duties of 20-35% on steel, aluminium, and cement, which he argues will increase the cost of living and fuel inflation within the bloc.

Goyal argued that these regulations act as non-tariff barriers that reduce the competitiveness of European industries, specifically citing a 15-20% decline in German automobile sales over the last decade as evidence of existing industrial struggle. He cautioned that such policies invite retaliatory measures from trading partners in a reciprocal global market.

The minister further highlighted the disparity in climate responsibility, noting that India contributes only 3-3.5% of global carbon emissions compared to the EU's 20%. He criticized developed nations for failing to deliver the $100 billion annual climate finance commitment established at the 2009 Copenhagen conference, stating that developed nations have failed to provide promised aid while imposing unfair costs on developing economies. Goyal emphasized that India must balance clean energy growth with the energy and food needs of 1.4 billion people.
