Report Criticizes UK Global Military Spending as Outdated
The Transition Security Project warns that the United Kingdom wastes billions on global military deployments at the expense of domestic defense and public services.
The Transition Security Project released a report arguing that the United Kingdom maintains an overly overseas-oriented military that prioritizes global force projection over domestic defense. The research center, a spin-off from the Common Wealth thinktank, found that Britain spends approximately 23% of its military budget—exceeding £14 billion in 2024/25—on commitments across five continents, the highest proportion among European nations.
Researchers characterize this spending as a symptom of a destructive and outdated foreign policy. They warn that the government's plan to increase defense spending to 3.5% of GDP by 2035 will result in further waste unless the state shifts its priorities. The report urges the government to redirect resources toward the climate emergency, housing, and health.
In contrast, defense officials maintain that current priorities are necessary to prepare for a potential war in Europe. The Transition Security Project argues that maintaining a global network of bases and procurement waste raises serious questions about the allocation of public investment.
