Lloyds Banking Group to Close 247 Branches Through 2027
Lloyds Banking Group is shutting hundreds of branches across its brands as customers shift toward digital banking apps and online services.
Lloyds Banking Group is implementing a large-scale reduction of its physical footprint, with plans to close 247 branches across its Lloyds Bank, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland brands by 2027. The group attributes the closures to evolving consumer habits, noting that over 21 million customers now use its apps and approximately 87% of UK adults utilize digital banking.
Recent closures include 26 Halifax branches in June and an additional 45 scheduled for the remainder of 2026. In October 2026, the group will shut 26 more branches across the Lloyds and Halifax brands, starting with a Lloyds location in Rochdale on October 1 and continuing through October 29. These October closures affect multiple cities, including Birmingham, Bristol, Barnsley, and Southampton.
To mitigate the loss of physical sites, the group is directing customers toward remaining branches, Community Bankers, Post Office banking hubs, and PayPoint locations for cash deposits. While the bank emphasizes the convenience of digital options, campaigners have raised concerns about the impact these closures will have on older and more vulnerable customers who depend on in-person banking services.
