House Members Campaign for Energy and Commerce Committee Seats

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives are campaigning for appointments to the House Energy and Commerce Committee as eight seats—four for Democrats and four for Republicans—become available. These vacancies result from retirements, primary losses, and bids for higher office. The committee maintains broad jurisdiction over critical sectors including artificial intelligence, health care, energy, and telecommunications.

Democratic candidates, including Representatives Melanie Stansbury, Maxine Dexter, Jill Tokuda, Eric Sorensen, and Luz Rivas, are highlighting their policy expertise and constituent needs. This selection process may lead to an ideological clash between progressives and moderates within the Democratic caucus. Representative Frank Pallone indicated he may pursue progressive policies if Democrats secure the majority.

Republican candidates, such as Representatives Bob Onder and Brad Knott, are also seeking seats. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has already received a recommendation letter for Representative Onder's appointment. Committee Chair Brett Guthrie acknowledged the high level of interest among members seeking to join the panel.

Final selections will be determined after the elections by the Democratic Steering and Policy Committee and the House Republican Steering Committee.
