India Celebrates 80th Independence Day Across Multiple Cities

India marked its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, with celebrations across several regions. In Kupwara, Nasir Aslam Wani, Advisor to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, unfurled the National Flag at the District Police Lines. During the ceremony, Wani identified the restoration of statehood as the government's "fundamental goal" and a primary expectation of the electorate.

Wani highlighted significant regional progress, noting that Kupwara's comprehensive development score increased from 37.8 to 65.8. He specifically praised the Keran block for ranking first nationally in the Aspirational Block Programme Delta Ranking and called for further improvements to health, education, and infrastructure in border areas.

Simultaneous celebrations occurred in Hyderabad and Madurai. In Hyderabad, City Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar hoisted the flag at the CAR headquarters and honored 72 officers for meritorious service. Sajjanar noted police successes in fighting food adulteration and cybercrime, while referencing the Spandana Instant Protection responder system for women's safety launched by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. In Madurai, City Commissioner of Police S. Rajendran led ceremonies at the Police Boys and Girls Club, with additional events held at the Gandhi Memorial Museum and Madurai Kamaraj University.
