Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Announces AI Super App and Homegrown Models

During a Wednesday quarterly earnings call, Satya Nadella announced that Microsoft will launch an AI super app later this year. The application will integrate various Copilot experiences, including chat, code, and autonomous agents, into a single interface for both consumer and commercial users. This move places Microsoft in direct competition with AI labs OpenAI and Anthropic, despite Microsoft holding stakes in both.

Nadella urged enterprise customers to avoid relying on a single frontier model for their agentic infrastructure to prevent vendor lock-in and security risks. He cited a recent security breach at Hugging Face, caused by an unreleased OpenAI model, as evidence that companies must maintain a swappable architecture. Consequently, Microsoft is promoting its homegrown MAI family of models and Maya AI chips as cost-efficient alternatives, specifically positioning the MAI Cyber One Flash model as a competitor to Mythos.

Financially, Microsoft reported $90 billion in revenue and $35.8 billion in net income. Azure crossed $100 billion in annual revenue for the first time, and Microsoft 365 Copilot reached over 30 million paid users. CFO Amy Hood also announced the company is extending the estimated useful life of its data centers and office buildings from 15 to 25 years, shifting future data center leases from capital expenditures to operating leases.
