Obidient Movement Proposes Half Price Fuel Subsidy Policy

The Obidient Movement proposes a transparent fuel subsidy framework under Peter Obi to allow Nigerians to pay half the reference price for petrol.

The Obidient Movement announced a proposal to restore fuel subsidies through a Half Price Policy under a government led by Peter Obi. This framework would allow Nigerians to pay half of an independently determined reference price for petrol, with weekly prices based on international benchmarks. To prevent fraud, the movement proposes using digital tracking and an independent panel to ensure payments are linked only to verified sales at metered pumps.

The proposal follows criticism of the current administration's 30-day petrol discount. The movement alleges that the All Progressives Congress government continues to make subsidy payments under aliases such as energy security costs and under-recovery, despite public claims that the subsidy was eliminated.

Additionally, the group highlighted discrepancies in petrol consumption data. They noted that daily consumption figures rose from approximately 30 million litres in September 2024 to 50 million litres in October 2026, a figure reported by Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele. The movement argues these contradictions undermine the government's stated position on subsidy removal.
