Apple Integrates Gemini-Powered Siri AI Into iPhone Camera
Apple introduced a new Siri AI mode for the iPhone Camera app in iOS 27 that uses Google's Gemini model for visual intelligence.
Apple Inc. introduced a new Siri mode within the iPhone Camera app as part of iOS 27, a move first announced at the WWDC 2026 conference. According to company announcements, this AI-powered integration brings visual intelligence features to the camera, allowing users to point their device at objects to identify plants, translate text, retrieve general information, and view nutritional data for food.
Developer release notes indicate the system includes utility tools that enable users to scan restaurant bills for splitting expenses via Apple Cash and add event flyers directly to the Calendar app. These capabilities, which were previously limited to the Camera Control button, became accessible through the camera app mode in the second developer beta. The features are scheduled for a stable release in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
This revamp of Siri is powered by Google's Gemini model. Beyond the camera integration, the AI overhaul includes expanded system-wide writing tools and a standalone application for managing conversation history. By integrating Google's large language model, Apple shifts its Siri ecosystem toward more generative capabilities, potentially increasing user engagement with the iPhone camera as a primary interface for real-world information retrieval.
