Activist Elefante Blanco Sworn In as Colombian Senator

Luis Carlos Rúa, an anti-corruption activist known as Elefante blanco, was sworn in as a Colombian senator on August 4, 2026. Rúa rose to prominence by wearing a white plush elephant costume to expose overpriced or abandoned public works on social media. He secured approximately 124,000 votes as an independent candidate, though he kept his identity secret until three days before the election due to death threats he received after leaking evidence of government corruption in Pereira.

Immediately following his swearing-in, Rúa faced criticism for voting to move the presidential inauguration of Abelardo de la Espriella from Bogotá to Cali. Rúa defended the move as a means to signal state presence in a neglected region. He stated he would attend the upcoming ceremony in his elephant costume to maintain his role of political oversight.
