Maine Voters Cast Record Early Ballots Ahead of Midterms
Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows reports record early voting numbers as citizens cite economic concerns and foreign conflicts as primary motivations.
Maine voters are casting early ballots in record numbers leading up to the November 3, 2026, midterm elections. Secretary of State Shenna Bellows reported that approximately 178,000 voters requested absentee ballots, with more than 100,000 already returned to election officials.
Voters identified the rising cost of living, the ongoing war in Iran, and a tariff war with Canada as the primary drivers for their early participation. Specific economic concerns include high grocery prices, housing costs, and heating oil prices across the Northeast.
Alongside the voting surge, state officials observed Election Hero Day to recognize the city clerks, election officials, and poll workers who manage the voting process. Bellows visited Westbrook to celebrate the event, where Westbrook City Clerk Ellis Ledoux highlighted the role of local volunteers in maintaining safe and secure elections.
