FSSAI Issues Notices to Multiple Firms Over Misleading Labels
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has ordered several food companies to explain misleading product claims regarding freshness, organic status, and health benefits.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued a series of notices to multiple food companies between July 6 and July 8, 2026, for violating the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The regulator directed the companies to provide explanations within seven days regarding misleading product claims.
Initial notices targeted Heritage Foods Ltd, Dia Foods, and Cipzer Nutraceuticals. Dia Foods was flagged for unauthorized organic and vegan claims on its hazelnut chocolate spread, while Cipzer was cited for claiming its juice capsules were FSSAI approved without scientific evidence. Heritage Foods faced scrutiny over the terms Fresh Paneer and Healthy Happiness. In response, the company argued that its paneer is made from pasteurized milk for refrigerated consumption and is not frozen or dehydrated. CEO Srideep Kesavan maintained that the labels include all mandatory declarations.
On July 8, the FSSAI expanded its enforcement to include Lotte India Corporation Private Limited, Kubera Foods, and Ferns N Petals Private Limited. Lotte India was cited for outdated company names and misleading vegetarian claims on Choco Pies. Kubera Foods was flagged for claiming its pineapple cream buns were 100 per cent natural and preservative-free, while Ferns N Petals was notified for labeling chocolate as premium despite using hydrogenated vegetable fat.
