Glen Kacher Predicts 20-Year AI Infrastructure Cycle

Glen Kacher of Light Street Capital argues the AI infrastructure build-out is a long-term cycle and maintains a concentrated semiconductor portfolio.

Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Light Street Capital Glen Kacher maintains a concentrated investment portfolio heavily weighted toward semiconductor companies, including Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom, and TSMC. During an appearance on Bloomberg's 'Masters in Business', Kacher argued that the current AI infrastructure build-out represents a 15-to-20-year cycle rather than a short-term bubble.

Kacher employs a variant perception strategy, which focuses on identifying mismatches between market perception and reality. He noted a current shift in the industry from training compute toward inference, while observing emerging competition between closed frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic and more affordable open-source alternatives.

Addressing potential scaling bottlenecks, Kacher identified energy demands and local political opposition to data center construction as primary hurdles. He characterized these issues as education challenges rather than fundamental investment risks. He also described San Francisco as a boom town experiencing a renaissance of intellectual capital driven by the AI surge.
